Football: Former England star Paul Gascoigne faces assault trial for kissing incident

LONDON (AFP) - Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne will stand trial for sexual assault in October after allegedly kissing a woman without consent on a train, a judge ruled on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 51-year-old ex-Tottenham and Lazio player was arrested on a train between York and Newcastle in August.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough in north-east England to formally enter a not guilty plea, the Press Association news agency reported.
His lawyer Michelle Heeley told the court that a number of character witnesses will give evidence "about his propensity to kiss people in a non-sexual manner".
Gascoigne, who has struggled with alcoholism since he retired from top-flight football, wore a blue suit and an open-neck shirt and spoke out during the hearing.
"I'm worried to bits. I'm scared," Gascoigne told judge Simon Bourne-Arton, who granted him unconditional bail.
When told he would have to turn up for the trial, Gascoigne said: "I cannot wait. I have done nothing wrong".
The trial on one charge of "sexual assault by touching" is set to be held on Oct 14.
Gascoigne - known as "Gazza" - made his name with Newcastle before going on to play for Tottenham, Italian giants Lazio and several other teams including Rangers.

The midfielder, widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation, was also a key member of the England side that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He won 57 caps in total.
Gascoigne was one of the first big-name footballers to arrive in China when he made the shock decision to be a player-coach of second division Gansu Tianma in 2003 but he lasted just a handful of games.
In an interview published on Tottenham's website last year, he said: "Sometimes when I look back and people say to me 'do you regret anything in your career'?
"Perhaps I left Spurs too early. I loved it there. The players, the staff, everyone was class and the team spirit was phenomenal, absolute class. We had a great team."

Football: Guardiola trusts Man City to resolve FFP allegations

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Pep Guardiola is confident his achievements at Manchester City will not be tarnished by Uefa's investigation into alleged Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches and trusted the club to resolve the matter, the Spanish manager said on Friday (March 8).
Uefa opened a formal investigation into the alleged FFP violations on Thursday, a move Premier League champions City welcomed in a bid to end speculation surrounding the club's sponsorship agreements.
When asked whether he was concerned his achievements at City would be tainted by the allegations, Guardiola told reporters: "No, absolutely not.
"The club made a statement, so I can't add more than that. The club are open, hopefully it can finish as soon as possible.
"I trust a lot what the club has done, because I know them and hopefully they can solve it as soon as possible."
German publication Der Spiegel reported in November that City's Abu Dhabi owners inflated sponsorship agreements in order to comply with FFP requirements.
City's statement on Thursday said accusations of financial irregularities were entirely false.

City host eighth-placed Watford on Saturday and Guardiola hailed their manager Javi Gracia, who looks set to lead them to their best-ever finish in the Premier League.
"It's incredible what he's done, one of the toughest games we had," Guardiola, who was voted February's Premier League manager of the month, said.
"In the last nine games, they have physicality, quality one-on-one, strong in the air, well organised... what he's done has been incredible."
Guardiola was unsure if centre back Aymeric Laporte would play a part but confirmed midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was still unfit after suffering a hamstring injury in last weekend's 1-0 win at Bournemouth.
"All of them are getting better. Ayme (Laporte) is back, he trained the last two to three days but I don't know if he's available for tomorrow," said Guardiola.
"Fernandinho is out, Kevin (De Bruyne) is not right, not fit. John Stones is not fit either but the other ones are OK."

LONDON ̢ۢ Raheem Sterling might have hogged the limelight with his hat-trick in England's 5-0 thrashing of the Czech Republic in their Euro 2020 qualifying opener on Friday, but much of the hype also revolved around the emergence of talented youngsters.
Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho provided the opener and dazzled with some of his footwork at Wembley, where fellow Under-17 World Cup winner Callum Hudson-Odoi and newly eligible Declan Rice came on for their debuts.
Hudson-Odoi, who came off the bench to break Duncan Edwards' 64-year-old record by becoming the youngest Three Lion at 18 years and 135 days, made a sparkling 20-minute cameo that hinted at a dazzling future.
England manager Gareth Southgate sees nothing wrong in his emphasis on youthful dash and dare.
"We have a smaller pool to pick from, so you've got to think a bit more creatively. You can't wait for 40, 50 league matches, but that doesn't mean that the players aren't of the quality to go in and do well," he said ahead of England's second Group A qualifier in Montenegro today.
"Absolutely we've got competition for places and I think with attacking players, they mature very young and they can go in very young. So it's not an issue to play them."
Southgate has shown time and again that he has no qualms about giving youngsters a chance, yet there is a balance to be struck in terms of getting the best out of them.
Part of his challenge now is making sure these players keep their feet on the ground while their careers soar, and getting the balance right between playing and commercial opportunities while with England.
Citing former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's handling of Ryan Giggs, the 48-year-old added: "Although they're not our players on a day-to-day basis, I think we've got a responsibility to make sure we get the balance right for the club, but most importantly for the player.
"I always think of Sir Alex with Ryan and how he did that so well. They had sustained success because of that."

TOUGH OPPOSITION
We know we have been there (in Montenegro) twice before and not managed to beat them, so it will be an intense environment, completely different to the challenge (against the Czechs).
GARETH SOUTHGATE, England manage, on the trip to Montenegro for their second Euro 2020 qualifier today.

Southgate will make changes against Montenegro in order to balance "freshness and continuity" as the match in Podgorica comes just 70 hours after the Wembley win over the Czechs.
"I need to have a look at their game (a 1-1 draw away to Bulgaria) to finalise what we expect (from Montenegro)," he said.
"But we know we have been there twice before and not managed to beat them, so it will be an intense environment, completely different to the challenge (against the Czechs).
"It's a good one for us because we have to be able to adapt to these different situations and make sure that we can show our quality in different environments."
Montenegro do not have any sympathy for England despite Eric Dier becoming the seventh member of Southgate's original squad to withdraw through injury after Friday's game, although the home side have problems of their own.
Former Manchester City winger Stevan Jovetic has returned to his club Monaco because of injury and Stefan Savic, another ex-City player, missed the 1-1 draw in Bulgaria with a hamstring problem and faces a race against time to face England, reported the Daily Mail.
Said Lazio defender Adam Marusic: "Maybe it gives us some hope but, honestly, I don't think it's a problem for them.
"No, we don't feel sorry for England."

Football: 10-man Arsenal slump in Rennes, Sevilla held in Europa League

RENNES, France (REUTERS) - Arsenal took an early lead but a red card for Sokratis Papastathopoulos changed the game as the Gunners slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Rennes on a night of tightly-contested Europa League last-16 first-leg ties on Thursday (March 7).
Villarreal and Dinamo Zagreb also won and the other two early games, Sevilla versus Slavia Prague and Eintracht Frankfurt versus Inter Milan, ended all square.
Arsenal had never lost to French opposition away from home in 12 previous European games and they took an early lead when what looked like a cross from Alex Iwobi evaded everyone and sneaked in at the far post.
Playing in their change turquoise-green shirts, the English side looked to be in control but the match changed completely four minutes before halftime when Papastathopoulos was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Rennes equalised from the resulting free kick when Benjamin Bourigeaud rifled home at the second attempt and they came out for the second half looking far more positive than the London side.
The French side went ahead 20 minutes into the second half when Mehdi Zeffane's shot looped off defender Nacho Monreal into the net and Ismaila Sarr made it 3-1 two minutes from time when he powered home a header from a lovely curling left-wing cross.
Sevilla, who have won the Europa League three times, twice went ahead against Slavia Prague but were pegged back on both occasions in a pulsating 2-2 draw in Spain.

Wissam Ben Yedder put the home side ahead in the first minute and although Miroslav Stoch equalised with a deflected shot, Munir restored Sevilla's lead.
Alex Kral put the visitors level again six minutes before halftime when he turned a corner into the net.
Fellow Spaniards Villarreal had a happier evening in St Petersburg and will take a solid 3-1 lead into the second leg at home.
Villarreal, third bottom of La Liga, went ahead against Zenit after 33 minutes when Vicente Iborra headed home from a free kick but the home side took only two minutes to level thanks to Sardar Azmoun, whose quick thinking allowed him to stab home from close range.
The Spaniards, though, took control in the second half, with Gerard Moreno putting them 2-1 ahead after 64 minutes and Manu Morlanes added the third.
Bruno Petkovic scored a penalty for Dinamo Zagreb to give them a 1-0 home win over Benfica while in the only game between two former winners of the UEFA Cup, Eintracht Frankfurt were held 0-0 at home by Inter Milan.
It was the first time Eintracht, who have won seven of their eight Europa League matches this season, failed to score.
Chelsea host Dynamo Kiev, Napoli take on Salzburg and Valencia entertain Russian club Krasnodar later on Thursday.

Football: Tributes pour in for Stoke's England World Cup-winning 'keeper Gordon Banks, who dies at 81

LONDON (AFP) - Gordon Banks, the England football team's goalkeeper when they won the 1966 World Cup, has died aged 81, his former club Stoke announced on Tuesday (Feb 12).
His family said the former star, who lost an eye in a car crash in 1972, had died in his sleep.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight," they said.
"We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him."
Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over West Germany in the World Cup final at Wembley, tweeted a fulsome tribute to his former team-mate.
"Very sad to hear the news that Gordon has died. One of the very greatest," tweeted the 77-year-old.
"Thinking especially of Ursula (wife), Julia, Wendy and Robert (children). Sad for football, Stoke City and for England fans. Will be very sadly missed."

Banks, who played in every game of that historic campaign, is probably best known for a wonder save he produced to deny football legend Pele in a 1970 World Cup group match in Mexico.
"Once I got my hand to it I hadn't a clue where it was going," he modestly said afterwards.
Pele - who would go on to lift the trophy - admitted later he had said "gol", so sure was he that the ball was heading into the net. Brazil still won the game 1-0.
However, Banks later recounted that he did not appreciate the remark made by one of his team-mates that day, midfielder Alan Mullery.
"I patted him on his head, and I said 'why didn't you catch it?' and the abuse that came back was unbelievable," said Mullery.
Banks, whose club playing career revolved largely around Stoke and Leicester, is the latest of the 1966 team to die.
Captain Bobby Moore, the baby of the team Alan Ball and Ray Wilson preceded him while several such as Nobby Stiles and Martin Peters suffer from Alzheimer's.
Mullery said Banks was probably the best goalkeeper he had played with or against.
"He was the best at that time. We had some great goalkeepers in those days, and the only person I can think came near was Pat Jennings," said Mullery. "He was absolutely marvellous goalkeeper. He was a likeable man, and when it came to business, he was probably the best there has ever been."

Gordon Banks vs Pele World Cup Save

'He had goose-bumps'

Another former Leicester and England legend Gary Lineker - albeit from a later generation - also tweeted his appreciation of Banks, whose sole trophies at club level were two League Cups, one piece with Stoke and Leicester.
"Oh no. Gordon Banks, an absolute hero of mine, and countless others, has died," tweeted Lineker. "@England's World Cup winner was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and such a lovely, lovely man. #RIPGordon."
Stoke City chairman Peter Coates said Banks - who played 250 times for The Potters after he joined from Leicester in 1967 - had not been in good health for several weeks.
"We've been expecting this, he has been (doing) poorly for a number of weeks but it's a very sad day for us, we love him so much," said Coates. "He made his home in Stoke, and was very much part of the fabric of the club. You don't get too many like him, and he was immensely modest for all (his) talent.
"He told me when they walked out at Wembley for the final, and he had goose-bumps, he had never seen anything like it."

Football: Chelsea held 2-2 by Burnley, denting Champions League hopes

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea suffered a setback in their push for a Champions League spot when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley in the Premier League on Monday (April 22).
Jeff Hendrick gave Burnley an early lead before goals from N'Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain put the home side ahead by the 14th minute. However, the Londoners failed to hold on to the lead as Ashley Barnes drew the visitors level 10 minutes later.
After Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Arsenal all lost at the weekend, Chelsea had an opportunity to tighten their grip on the Premier League's top four places.
But it was Burnley - seeking to avoid being sucked back into the relegation fight - who struck first when Hendrick volleyed home in the eighth minute after a headed clearance found him in space on the edge of the penalty area.
Chelsea hit back with two goals in two minutes. First, winger Eden Hazard bamboozled Burnley's defence before cutting the ball back for Kante to sweep home. Then Higuain blasted a shot in off the underside of the crossbar in the 14th minute.
Ten minutes later, Burnley were level again when Barnes evaded his marker at the back post to connect with a headed flick-on from Chris Wood.
After the end-to-end drama of the first 45 minutes, Chelsea dominated possession in the second half but failed to break down Burnley's defence.
The draw pushed Chelsea up a place into fourth spot in the Premier League, level on points with third-placed Spurs and one point ahead of Arsenal, both of whom have a played a game less.
Burnley remained 15th are nine points clear of the relegation zone with three games left to play.

LONDON ̢ۢ Jurgen Klopp claimed destiny will decide whether Liverpool win the Premier League, after Divock Origi's "fairy-tale" winner at Newcastle ensured the title race will go to the final day of the season.
Despite losing Mohamed Salah to a head knock in the second half, his replacement headed home Xherdan Shaqiri's free kick for a 3-2 away victory. It enabled the Reds to regain a two-point lead over Manchester City with one game left.
Afterwards, Klopp said his players had done their part in a bid to end a 29-year English title drought by "qualifying for our final on Sunday against Wolves".
He said: "What can I say? It's just brilliant. That was really a big moment. I accepted long ago that we will do everything, absolutely everything, and the boys will throw whatever they have on the pitch.
"We do everything, we cannot do more. Can you get more than 94 points? Not really. The boys tried everything, even when we had the draws, they tried everything to win.
"The boys showed in each second that they really want to win it. We knew what we had to do and the boys did it in a very difficult game.
"Credit to Newcastle. Wow. If people doubt the teams that don't play for anything any more, that they are halfway on the beach already, that was the opposite."

Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of those recalled and he was to have an eventful evening at both ends, adding two assists to take his season's tally to 11, the same as Andy Robertson on the opposite flank.
His corner found Virgil van Dijk completely unmarked to open the scoring for his fifth goal of the term.
But Newcastle levelled with their first serious attack after Salomon Rondon's shot was saved on the line by Alexander-Arnold's arm, only for Christian Atsu to put the rebound away.
After surviving Ayoze Perez's strike that smashed off the crossbar, Liverpool took a 2-1 lead into the break with Salah's cushioned finish off Alexander-Arnold's cross.
Rondon equalised early in the second half and the game looked set for a draw - until Origi came to the rescue, just as he did with a late winner against Everton in December.
The blot on a thrilling night at St James' Park was confirmation that one of their "Fab Three", Roberto Firmino, would miss the Barcelona clash with a groin injury.
Klopp, though, was more hopeful over Salah's availability, adding: "Mo got the hip of the goalie in his head and then was on the ground.
"When we came in (after), he was sitting in the dressing room and had watched the game.
"He was then fine but, of course, we have to wait. He got a proper knock in that situation."
Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez could have taken charge of Newcastle for the last time at home.
The Spaniard's contract runs out this summer and his four seasons at the club have been clouded by a frosty relationship with owner Mike Ashley.
He said: "It is so simple, you can see the potential. I am really proud and pleased we stayed up, but I would like to do something more."

Football: Madrid beat Villarreal in front of sparse Bernabeu crowd

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid earned a fifth consecutive home win by beating Villarreal 3-2 in an open and entertaining game on Sunday (May 5) in front of their lowest crowd for a league fixture this season.
Madrid got off to an ideal start when Mariano Diaz netted in the second minute after teenager Brahim Diaz had chased down Santi Cazorla but Villarreal hit back in the 11th when Gerard Moreno slammed the ball inside the near post from outside the area after Real midfielder Casemiro was dispossessed.
Madrid, got themselves back in front shortly before halftime when defender Jesus Vallejo stuck the ball into an empty net after a deflected shot from Marcelo, while Mariano struck again early in the second half to stretch his side's advantage.
Villarreal continued to threaten and after they missed several chances Jaume Costa pulled a goal back in stoppage time, while defender Xavier Quintilla had an opportunity to level in the final seconds of the game but missed the target.
As a disappointing season for Madrid winds to a close, the encounter at the Bernabeu was played in front of only 46,294 fans, in a stadium that holds over 80,000.
Madrid are third in the standings on 68 points after 36 games and still have an outside chance of catching second-placed Atletico Madrid who have 74 after losing at Espanyol on Saturday.
Champions Barcelona have 83 points after losing 2-0 at Celta Vigo.

Another racial storm hits Chelsea

Another racial storm hits Chelsea

BUDAPEST ̢ۢ Chelsea's reputation took another withering blow on Thursday, with the club condemning their own fans after they were heard singing anti-Semitic chants in Hungary, just days after four fans were suspended for the alleged racial abuse of Raheem Sterling.
This was their first match since last Saturday's Premier League victory over Manchester City, which was overshadowed by the vitriol directed at the Englishman.
But, just minutes into their Europa League dead rubber at Vidi, the away supporters were heard singing a derogatory chant about London rivals Tottenham, who are known to have a significant Jewish following.
Maurizio Sarri's men were attempting to put the Sterling controversy behind them but instead, the Group L winners, who had already qualified for the last 32, were left facing another discrimination storm following the 2-2 draw.
Afterwards, the Premier League club issued a strongly-worded statement, saying: "Anti-Semitism and any other kind of race-related or religious hatred is abhorrent to this club and the overwhelming majority of our fans.
"It has no place at Chelsea or in any of our communities. We have stated this loud and clear on many occasions from the owner, the board, coaches and players.
"Any individual that can't summon the brainpower to comprehend this simple message and are found to have shamed the club by using anti-Semitic or racist words or actions will face the strongest possible action from the club."

EDUCATE AND REFORM
If you just ban people, you will never change their behaviour. This policy gives them the chance to realise what they have done, to make them want to behave better.
BRUCE BUCK, Chelsea chief, on sending racist fans to concentration camps.

Uefa said that it would wait to receive official reports before launching an investigation.
"As is standard procedure, we will be waiting for official reports from the game before deciding if any action/investigation into any alleged misbehaviour should be launched," a statement from European football's governing body read.
The Blues have long had a history of their fans making anti-Semitic taunts towards Spurs supporters, and the club were forced to make a public statement condemning their actions in the most recent high-profile case in October.
In January, Chelsea announced a new campaign, supported by their Russian-Jewish owner Roman Abramovich, to "raise awareness of and educate our players, staff, fans and the wider community about anti-Semitism in football".
The club also told The Sun in October that they intend to send racist supporters on trips to Auschwitz, the former Nazi concentration camp, instead of imposing banning orders.
In an interview with the paper, Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck then said: "If you just ban people, you will never change their behaviour.
"This policy gives them the chance to realise what they have done, to make them want to behave better."

Football: Rampant City crush Schalke with magnificent seven in Champions League

Football: Rampant City crush Schalke with magnificent seven in Champions League

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City powered into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday (March 12) as Sergio Aguero's double paved the way for a 7-0 rout of hapless Schalke in the last 16 second leg.
City had snatched two late goals to win the first leg 3-2 and they made the most of that fightback with a ruthless demolition job at the Etihad Stadium to clinch a 10-2 aggregate victory.
Aguero's penalty opened the scoring at and the Argentine forward netted again before Leroy Sane, who also contributed three assists, struck against his former club.
Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus all scored after the interval to complete City's biggest home win in the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola's side, who lifted the League Cup in February, remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple, sitting one point ahead of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League before this weekend's FA Cup quarter-final at Swansea.
This emphatic victory was the joint-biggest ever Champions League knockout stage win but won't linger long in the memory given Schalke's total lack of resistence. However it could be a good omen as City beat Schalke en route to winning their only European trophy in the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup.
Twice a Champions League winner as Barcelona boss, Guardiola claimed this week that City are "teenagers" in the competition compared to the more established European powers.
They have never won the Champions League, with their best performance a semi-final appearance in 2016 under Guardiola's predecessor Manuel Pellegrini.
But City are one of the favourites to claim the trophy after Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain crashed out and, on this evidence, Guardiola's players are up for the challenge of showing they are more mature than he believes.
It seems only winning Europe's elite club prize can make City fans fall in the love with the tournament.
Once again they loudly jeered the Champions League anthem, this time in frustration at UEFA's recent investigation into the club over allegations of financial misconduct.
Guardiola had claimed it would be a "dangerous situation" to underestimate Schalke, but the struggling Bundesliga team were never a realistic candidate to spring a surprise.

FLOODGATES OPENED

Sprinting onto Kyle Walker's pass, Sterling crossed for Aguero to shoot against a post in the opening moments.
Guardiola's men monopolised possession and their territorial dominance finally paid off in the 35th minute.
Ilkay Gundogan clipped a pass into the Schalke penalty area and Jeffrey Bruma bundled over Bernardo, with the spot-kick awarded after being checked by VAR.
Aguero stepped up to nonchalantly chip the penalty down the middle as Ralf Fahrmann dived the wrong way.
Aguero has now scored in four successive Champions League games for the first time.
That opened the floodgates as Aguero quickly put the result beyond doubt three minutes later.
Sterling was the provider as he raced onto Gundogan's pass and pulled the ball back to Aguero, who squeezed his shot past Fahrmann from a tight angle for his 27th goal of the season.
An interminable VAR delay of several minutes while Sterling was confirmed as onside drew more boos from City fans.
But they were celebrating again in the 42nd minute.
This time it was Sane who ripped open the shambolic Schalke defence, the German winger sent clear on goal by Oleksandr Zinchenko before driving a clinical strike into the far corner.
City were streets ahead of Schalke in every phase of the game and Sterling maintained his sublime form with a cool finish from Sane's majestic pass in the 56th minute.
Bernardo made it five in the 71st minute, netting with a first-time shot from Sane's pass.
There was still time for Foden to bag his first Champions League goal as the young midfielder took Sane's pass and slotted home in the 78th minute.
Jesus beat Fahrmann's weak attempted save with six minutes left to complete City's perfect evening.
