Manchester United will have been rocked by the news David De Gea is set to reject a new deal at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard has been one of United’s best players since his arrival in 2011 and the reports will come as a huge blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
With Paul Pogba seemingly set for a second exit, the Norwegian is facing the possibility of starting next season without two of his best players.
Given the club’s return to the Europa League after a disappointing sixth-placed finish, attracting superstar replacements will be a real challenge.
However, the Red Devils still have a huge global appeal and their stature in the game is unprecedented – with their value on the New York Stock Exchange still standing at £2.5billion despite their season of turmoil.
With De Gea set to join Paris Saint-Germain in this window for £60million or for free in 2020, Solskjaer knows he must act fast.
LATEST FOOTBALL STORIES
According to journalist Duncan Castles, the 46-year-old wants to bring in a goalkeeper capable of playing behind a high defensive line – a sweeper-keeper.
Castles told The Transfer Window podcast: “[Solskjaer’s] looking for a goalkeeper who is more comfortable with the ball at his feet.
“I don’t think De Gea is bad in that respect, but he’s not at the same level as Ederson is, for example.
“And he’s certainly not a goalkeeper who particularly likes playing behind a high line.
“So it seems Solskjaer is saying ‘if I have to change, I’m gonna use this as an opportunity to change tactically and sign a goalkeeper who would be comfortable playing the ball from the back and playing behind a high line.’
“You can see the reasoning there and you can see that playing into the type of football that Solskjaer played in Norway.
“My question mark, though, would be – do you really want to play that way with the defenders Manchester United have?”
But who could United bring in who would fit the bill? See 10 potential De Gea replacements talkSPORT.com have lined up for next season below.
LATEST TRANSFER STORIES
Andre Onana (Ajax)
United are reportedly lining up a bid to sign Onana from Ajax, should De Gea leave Old Trafford this summer.
The 23-year-old played a crucial role in helping the Dutch side lift the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup as well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
According to the Daily Record, the Red Devils want to bring the former Barcelona youth team player to the Premier League.
Christian Fruchtl (Bayern Munich)
Tipped to be Manuel Neuer’s heir at Bayern and with Germany, Fruchtl certainly has big shoes to fill.
But the teenager is not waiting around for an opportunity and spoke openly of his desire to get a loan move to the German second division last season.
Although it will almost certainly take a huge offer to prise the starlet away from the Allianz Arena, United know it could well prove to be a huge investment of the club.
Keylor Navas (Real Madrid)
Thibaut Courtois’ move from Chelsea to Real Madrid last summer seemed to signal the end of Navas’ career in the Spanish capital – despite having just lifted a third consecutive Champions League trophy.
According to the Daily Express, the 32-year-old has been offered to United with Zinedine Zidane set to stick with Courtois for next season.
With bags of experience and cat-like reflexes, signing the Costa Rican for a reasonable sum could be a shrewd move.
Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona)
Since joining from Ajax in 2016, Cillessen has been limited to Copa del Rey appearances after failing to dislodge Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
In April, the 30-year-old revealed his desire to make a move in the summer after making just 30 appearances since his move.
Cillessen told Dutch television channel Ziggo Sport: ”First I will go on holiday and then I hope to have a new club where I can play, because I want to play.”
Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan)
Donnarumma is reportedly set to finally leave AC Milan IF the club fail to secure Champions League football for next season, but require three points against SPAL and a slip up from at least one of the teams above them.
According to il Corriere dello Sport, goalkeeper 20-year-old Donnarumma will be one of those to leave with Milan keen to get his €6million-a-year salary off the books.
It is reported that United will try and lure him to Old Trafford if De Gea leaves, but the move could face complications over agent Mino Raiola’s ban from football-related activities.
Jan Obla (Atletico Madrid)
Last August, Atletico seemed poised to finally emerge from the shadow of city rivals Real after winning the UEFA Super Cup and by adding a host of star names to an already dazzling squad.
And this was further buoyed when Oblak signed a new deal only last month.
However, since Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann confirmed they would be leaving, the chances of Oblak sticking around have decreased. Do not be surprised if United try and make a statement by launching a lucrative bid.
Pau Lopez (Real Betis)
While it is unlikely Lopez will be a name familiar with many supporters, Tottenham Hotspur fans may remember the Spaniard from a very brief loan spell where he failed to make a single appearance back in 2016-17.
After signing for Betis on a free transfer last summer, regular game time has allowed the shot-stopper to find his best form and he has even earned a recall to the national squad.
If the Red Devils want to sign a goalkeeper with potential, the 24-year-old would certainly not break the bank.
Thomas Strakosha (Lazio)
Last summer, Strakosha emerged as a target with Liverpool and was reportedly close to signing for the Anfield club.
But with Chelsea seemingly closing in on Alisson, the Reds moved swiftly and snapped the Roma shot-stopper up instead.
The 24-year-old Albanian international openly admits Neuer is his goalkeeping hero and models his own game on the World Cup winner – making him seemingly perfect for Solskjaer’s style of play.
Jordan Pickford (Everton)
Alongside Oblak, Jordan Pickford has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford since the former Sunderland star established himself as England’s No.1.
The Sun report Pickford is seen as the ideal replacement given he signed for the Toffees in 2017 for just £25milion, meaning they would get a huge return on their investment.
Despite making some high-profile errors this season on Merseyside, the 24-year-old is still thought of highly and his distribution makes him an ideal candidate.
Mile Svilar (Benfica)
For those not familiar with the 19-year-old from Antwerp, simply type his name into YouTube and revel in the numerous compilation videos of his saves from the past few seasons.
After breaking Iker Casillas’ record and becoming the youngest goalkeeper to appear in the Champions League, Svilar then became the youngest goalkeeper to save a penalty in the same competition – against Manchester United of all teams.
While United have been linked with a move for the goalkeeper’s team-mate Joao Felix, it would perhaps be wise to cast a glance at the youngster, who could well go on to become one of the world’s best.
