Manchester United news: Red Devils hatch plan for Wilfried Zaha return should bid for Jadon Sancho fail

Manchester United will target their former player and Crystal Palace star Wilfired Zaha in the summer should they fail in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

Zaha, who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing at Old Trafford , spent two years with the Red Devils from 2013-2015 but struggled to break into the first-team, making just two Premier League appearances.

After impressing in his second loan season with the Eagles, Zaha moved permanently in 2015 and has contributed 29 goals in 141 appearances at Selhurst Park since the move.

Manchester United’s prime target this summer is Borussia Dortmund forward Sancho and reports claim they are ready to pay over £100million for the teenager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the 18-year-old his top target as he looks to build his squad next season.

However, Die Borussen chiefs are said to desperate to keep hold of the England starlet, who has been an integral part of Borussia Dortmund’s title challenging squad.

According to Bleacher Report, Manchester United will turn to Zaha if they cannot lure Sancho back to the Premier League.

Zaha would reportedly be allowed to leave ahead of the 2019/20 season if the right offer is made.

However, the report adds that the Ivory Coast international has had reservations about a potential a return due to his dismal stint with the club.

Although the 26-year-old signed a new long-term deal last August, he would be available at a much lower price than Sancho and his experience in the English top-flight will be an attractive asset for the Red Devils hierarchy,

David de Gea: Manchester United goalkeeper will NOT be dropped despite recent mistakes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed David de Gea will play for Manchester United in their next Premier League match against Huddersfield.

De Gea, the Spain international, has long been one of United’s greatest servants, having been named the club’s Player of the Season for four of the previous five years.

De Gea has made a number of uncharacteristic errors this season

However, his performances over recent months have fallen well short of his usual high standards, with a number of high profile mistakes made across the past few matches.

His latest – a glaring error that secured Chelsea a draw in last week’s clash at Old Trafford – led to calls for Solskjaer to drop De Gea and give Sergio Romero the chance to play.

Romero is widely regarded as one of the best backup glovesmen in world football, though he’s been restricted to six appearances this season – none of which have come in the Premier League.

A number of fans want Romero to play United’s final two matches of the campaign, but Solskjaer confirmed De Gea will feature in Saturday’s visit to Huddersfield as his backup picked up an injury in training.

“I would think so, yeah… he will play,” Solskjaer said in his pre-match press conference.

“Sergio was injured yesterday so didn’t train, tweaked his knee, so David’s been training well this week.”

Solskjaer added on his under-fire keeper: “Towards the end now he’s been in headlines maybe for the wrong reasons, but, as I’ve said so many times, he has to deal with that.

Transfer rumours: Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal urged to sign Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt by World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus

Lothar Matthaus believes Luka Jovic is ready to make his mark in the Premier League after a sensational season with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Serbia international scored against Matthaus’ beloved Germany on Wednesday and it is becoming an all-too familiar sight for Germans.

With 22 goals from 26 starts in the German league, Jovic’s performances are surely starting to earn him recognition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Speaking exclusively in his Sun Sport column, the World Cup winner revealed why he thought one of Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United should try to sign the 21-year-old in the summer.

He wrote: “I see a real talent, a great talent – not yet a great player, but someone who could develop into one.

“Whenever his team attacks, Jovic looks to make the right runs. That is a huge skill to have.

“On top of that, though, is his mentality, his willingness to fight.

“We have seen that over the years from so many players from the former Yugoslavia.

“Jovic is a good technical player but he has become the spirit of his side at Frankfurt. He shows, every game, how much he wants to win.

The 21-year-old has been tipped to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League

4

The 21-year-old has been tipped to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League

“Jovic works for the team. And he leads the other players by his attitude, his determination and desire. That is the sign of a good player, a leader.

“You have to remember, sometimes, that he is only 21. He has plenty more to learn and will grow as a player.

“It seems to me that whatever happens he will not be at Frankfurt next season – and they will miss him.

“I know that Barcelona have been linked with him and normally if a club like that comes in it is hard for a player to say “no”.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United have been urged to sign the striker

4

Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United have been urged to sign the striker

“But I also know that Niko Kovac would like him at Bayern Munich and I have no doubt that he could play in the Premier League, even if it is more physical in England.

“I think he would be better staying in Germany or moving to England now. Then he can go to Spain later.

“But Jovic is good enough to play for a big club, no question – he knows how to play football and has it in him to adapt to a new league.

“Jovic did that when he went to Benfica to play in the second team there from Red Star Belgrade and since he moved to Germany.

“He would be able to do it for a top team in England, a Champions League team. He can make that next step, no question, but he will want to join a side that can win things.

“It will cost a lot. Frankfurt have the first option on him and there is no way he would be allowed to leave for less than £40m.

“But that is a price I would pay if I was a manager. It is the right price for a player of this quality. He is a natural goalscorer, young and able to get even better.”

Vincent Kompany will leave Manchester City this summer after 11 years of service, the club have confirmed.

The 33-year-old joined the club in the summer of 2008 and has made 360 appearances.

He signed off with victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday, where City thrashed Watford 6-0 to complete a domestic treble.

Kompany said: “As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out.

“I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club.”

The central defender was signed by Mark Hughes from German club Hamburg, days before the Sheikh Mansour takeover.

He became a key figure in the success which followed, and leaves City having won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups.

“I remember the first day, as clear as I see the last. I remember the boundless kindness I received from the people of Manchester,” Kompany added.

“I will never forget how all Man City supporters remained loyal to me in good times and especially bad times. Against the odds you have always backed me and inspired me to never give up.

“Sheikh Mansour changed my life and that of all the City fans around the world, for that I am forever grateful. A blue nation has arisen and challenged the established order of things, I find that awesome.

“I cherish the counsel and leadership of a good human being, Khaldoon Al Mubarak. Man City could not be in better hands.”

City chairman Khaldoon paid his own tribute to Kompany.

“There have been many important contributors to Manchester City’s renaissance, but arguably none are more important than Vincent Kompany,” he said.

“He defines the essence of the club. For a decade he has been the lifeblood, the soul, and beating heart of a supremely talented squad.

“A booming voice in the dressing room yet a quiet and measured ambassador off it, Vincent can be as proud of himself as we are of him.

Rob Elliot: Newcastle goalkeeper receives death threats over injury to Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah… despite not even playing against Reds

Football can evoke passion and emotion like no other sport, but sometimes fans get so caught up in the moment they overstep the mark.

This appears to have been the case in a recent incident concerning Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and the injury he suffered against Newcastle.

Salah was involved in an accidental collision with Martin Dubravka, the Magpies goalkeeper, in the second half of Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle last Saturday.

The Liverpool star sustained a concussion as a result of the clash, which meant he missed the Reds’ stunning comeback win over Barcelona in the Champions League.

It was expected Liverpool would lose to Barca given they were without Salah, as well as fellow forward Roberto Firmino, and fans were annoyed the collision against Newcastle ruled the Egypt international out Tuesday’s match.

Some ‘supporters’ took it too far, though, by sending death threats to a Newcastle goalkeeper in the wake of Salah’s injury.

However, the glovesman they sent the sinister threats to was not Dubravka, the man who collided with Salah – but instead backup keeper Rob Elliot.

Fans of Elliot, 33, replied with messages of support, laughing at the keyboard warriors for their inability to distinguish between Elliot and Dubravka.

The latter spoke of his concern at seeing Salah stricken on the pitch after their collision, saying he was only focused on catching the ball.

“I didn’t hit him with my hand, I didn’t punch him,” Dubravka said. “It might have been my hip.
