Nicola Berti only played 21 Premier League games for Tottenham, but fans still sing his name.
Arriving from Inter in January 1998 on a six-month contract, he helped Spurs avoid relegation contributing three goals and as many assists.
Now, the man who had a playboy reputation in his playing career and enjoys cult status in north London, will play in the second test event at Tottenham’s redeveloped White Hart Lane when Spurs legends play a team of Inter legends.

Recalling the differences in pre-match preparations between Serie A and the Premier League when he played, Berti explained his love of the good life followed him.
“We didn’t have an overnight stay before games like in Italy so I was in an Italian restaurant for a party one Friday night,†he recalled to the Independent in 2018.

Berti played 311 times for Inter and scored 41 goals between 1988 and 1998
“Out of the blue [Tottenham manager] Christian Gross appeared and he asked me: ‘What the hell are you doing here?’ I told him: ‘It’s my girlfriend’s birthday.’ It was the very first thing that came into my head. “Where is she?†he asked, so I just grabbed the nearest girl and presented her as my girlfriend.â€
Tottenham managed to avoid relegation in 1998 thanks in part to Berti and the goals of Jurgen Klinsmann, who was at White Hart Lane for his second spell where he scored nine goals in 15 league matches.

And Klinsmann, who played with Berti at Inter and who persuaded the Italian to move to London, will join Berti at Spurs’ new ground to play minutes for both sides.

He was 31 when he joined Spurs and operated in the Pirlo role, playing 21 Premier League games, scoring three and creating three goals
On the pitch, Berti remembers the Premier League, especially English players, were pretty ill-disciplined place when it came to tactics.
At 31, he arrived having had three serious injuries, but was still comfortable in the deep lying midfield role.
“At that time in England it wasn’t like now, there were fewer foreign owners, fewer foreign players so although the pace on the pitch was very high, it was completely disorganised and someone like me could play well, despite being at only 70 per cent of my capacity.â€
