Peter Crouch ‘proud to be the PFA Player of the Year trophy’

Peter Crouch has made a hilarious comparison between himself and the PFA Player of the Year trophy.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk beat Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero, Sadio Mane and Eden Hazard to win the award on Sunday.

The trophy resembles the long legs of 6ft 7ins Crouch, a similarity which was pointed out by the Burnley striker.

With a picture of the award attached, he tweeted: “Extremely proud to be the Pfa player of the year trophy.”

Van Dijk joined Liverpool in a £75million deal from Southampton in January 2018 and has been an ever-present at the heart of the Premier League‘s tightest defence this campaign.

The 27-year-old has helped Liverpool keep 19 clean sheets and concede only 20 times, while also scoring three goals.

The Reds have lost just once in the league this term but trail leaders Manchester City by one point with two games to go.

Van Dijk said: “It’s pretty difficult to put into words. I think it’s the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week.

“It’s special. I’m very proud and honoured to receive it. If you see the standard of strikers or playmakers we have in the league, it’s unbelievable.

“If you see the shortlist and the quality there is, it’s very special that the players in the league voted for me. I won’t take it for granted. It’s just very special.”
