Bolton Wanderers news: Championship club’s match against Ipswich in doubt due to ‘critical’ IT failure

Bolton’s match at home to Ipswich on Saturday is in doubt because of a ‘critical’ IT failure, the Championship club have announced.

This is the latest setback for Wanderers who had been placed under prohibition notice by the region’s safety advisory group (SAG) due to concerns over safety of the fans, however, that was lifted on Thursday before the new problem.

Bolton were given the all-clear to play the rest of their home matches at the University of Bolton Stadium

Bolton were given the all-clear to play the rest of their home matches at the University of Bolton Stadium

“Due to a critical failure of the stadium’s IT system, Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship match against Ipswich Town at the University of Bolton Stadium is in doubt,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“Engineers will be working through the night to resolve this issue and the club will provide an update at the earliest available opportunity.”

SAG, comprised of representatives of the local council, police and emergency services, lifted their notice after Bolton managed to “reassure” them over safety issues.

Bolton were given the go-ahead to stage matches at their stadium until the end of the season, but Saturday’s game could now fall victim to technical problems.

The club’s home match against Millwall last month was placed in doubt due to safety concerns after staff, including stewards and turnstile operators, were not paid their February wages on time, but the game did go ahead.

Bolton are desperately seeking to complete a club takeover in time to fend off a winding-up petition over an unpaid tax bill.

They were granted a further stay of execution by the High Court on Wednesday when controversial former Watford chairman Laurence Bassini was confirmed as the club’s prospective buyer.

Bolton had been given two weeks to settle their debts at an initial hearing on March 20, but on Wednesday the case was adjourned again until May 8 to allow the proposed sale of the club to proceed.

This is the sixth time in the last 18 months that Bolton have faced a winding-up order, which could result in administration or liquidation. The latest one was issued in February by HMRC over debts of £1.2million.

The club’s barrister Hilary Stonefrost told the court on Wednesday that Bassini, who attended the hearing, “had proof of funds”.

Bassini’s controversial tenure at Vicarage Road lasted only 13 months.

The 48-year-old has twice been declared bankrupt and was banned from holding a position of authority at an English Football League club for three years in 2013 for alleged financial misconduct while at Watford.

Bolton’s players meanwhile, have called upon the Professional Footballers’ Association and the English Football League to intervene over their unpaid wages for last month.

The squad has returned to training after refusing to do so while non-playing staff were waiting to be paid.

Ander Herrera could leave Manchester United in the summer

United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, chose to activate a year-long extension on Herrera’s contract last summer instead of negotiating a new deal.

The Daily Record report the Spain international has agreed a deal with PSG after being left unimpressed with the offer from the Red Devils.

Herrera’s protracted signing from Athletic Bilbao was completed in 2014 when United met his £28.85million buyout clause.

He has gone on to make 187 appearances for the club and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

The midfielder has established himself as a key member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team and has made 14 appearances under the new manager.

Solskjaer would appear to be been on keeping Herrera as he sees him as a vital part of the squad.

“His energy and tenaciousness is vital for us,” Solskjaer said recently. “And that’s why he plays, more or less, every single game. He has loads of energy, he can cover the right-hand side, he runs forward.”

Stags coach Kadir urges better focus after last-gasp goals

Tampines Rovers head coach Kadir Yahaya stepped into the press conference and told the media: "Let me catch my breath first."
The adrenaline was clearly still coursing through his veins. His team scored two last-gasp goals in added time to beat Nagaworld FC 4-2 in their AFC Cup Group F match at Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday.
The Stags cemented their place at the top of the group with 10 points, three ahead of Hanoi FC who beat Yangon FC 5-2 in the Asian Football Confederation's second-tier club competition.
Said Kadir: "We really tried to attack from the start to try and break the deadlock, and we could see the opponents trying to defend as much as they could.
"I think we deserved to win and get the three points tonight."
Tampines took the lead in the third minute when Zehrudin Mehmedovic slid a defence-splitting pass to Irwan Shah, who made no mistake with a clinical finish.
But the Cambodian team pulled level in the 14th minute through midfielder Kouch Dani.
The home team thought they had the win in the bag with Yasir Hanapi's half-volley in the 87th minute, only for Nagaworld to equalised again through Omogba Esoh on the stroke of full-time.
There was still time for more late drama, though, as Tampines striker Khairul Amri sent the 1,283 spectators into delirium with a superb overhead kick in the 91st minute.
Jordan Webb then made sure of the three points with the final goal just seconds before the final whistle.
Kadir described the final 10 minutes as "unbelievable", adding: "It's good for the fans on both sides but, from a coach's point of view, I was quite angry with the goals we conceded.
"After we scored, we lost concentration and this is our main problem we have to address."
The Stags play Yangon at Jalan Besar Stadium on May 1 before their last match at Hanoi on May 15.
Kadir added: "We need to be more clinical in front of goal. If we progress, we're going to expect much better teams and much better defence."

Daniel James: What experts say about Swansea winger set to sign for Manchester United and loved by Ryan Giggs

Daniel James is having a medical ahead of his transfer to Manchester United.

The Swansea City winger almost signed for Leeds in January but now finds himself on the verge of a switch to one of the biggest clubs in the world, even if they are a bit down on their luck at the moment.

The 21-year-old starlet has continued to perform well for both club and country, scoring the winning goal in Wales’ Euro 2020 qualifying win against Slovakia.

And James also shone as Swansea beat Brentford 3-0 where his man of the match performance also brought him a goal – his third of the campaign.

The Welshman, who had also been Premier League giants Manchester City, is known for his lightning pace which has caused havoc on opposing defenders all season.

Signed from Hull’s academy in 2014 for £72,000, he followed in the footsteps of Joe Allen and Ben Davies by going from the youth set up to first team player when he made his Swans debut in the Championship draw with Birmingham in August 2018 under Graham Potter.

“I believed that if I moved here, I would have a great opportunity to improve as a player and a person,” he told the club’s official website.

But what do people in the game make of James?

Joe Allen – Wales team-mate

“I can only give you my opinion, I think he is ready for it,” Stoke City’s Allen said of a potential move to Old Trafford.

“He is a level-headed lad who has huge ability and I am sure he wants to show it at the highest level he can.

“I am confident he can do that.”

James celebrates his goal for Wales against Slovakia

“He has had a great season,” Allen added.

“I remember even at the start of the year that was all the info I was getting from Swansea was that he had come on brilliantly.

“You go back to the start of the season and I don’t think it wasn’t that obvious.

“I think from the Welsh point of view, a lot of the lads knew him of course and knew the talent he has, but second half of the season he has been on fire there.”

Swansea Under-23 coach Gary Richards

“The minute we saw Dan, we saw his outstanding pace. The progression he has made over the past four years has been massive.”

John Hartson – ex-Wales international, in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT

“Dan James has got a bright future.

“He scored a goal in his second cap where he was starting on the left-hand side. He has ridiculous pace and played well against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

“He was almost out of the door and was up at Leeds signing for £10million and he brought him back.

“I think that will treble now with the market the way it is.”

Hartson believes James has a bright future and will earn Swansea a lot of money

5

Hartson believes James has a bright future and will earn Swansea a lot of money

Ryan Giggs – Wales manager

“He is a talent, and when you have got that raw pace you are a threat at any level.

“As a winger, you then have to develop the other parts of the game, which I feel that he is doing. He just needs to carry on doing what he’s doing for Swansea, it’s as simple as that.”

Meanwhile, he later said: “You don’t need to speak to me to see the quality Dan has, especially since the turn of the year. The break down of Leeds transfer could have affected him but since then he’s really kicked on.

5

‘I was at the Swansea v Stoke game and it was as good a wing performance as I’ve seen in a long time. He got two lads sent off and scored a worldy.”

And on a possible switch to Manchester United, he added: “If you go to United or any big club there is pressure on you. When you meet up internationally then you’re used to that pressure and there are so many benefits to playing at a higher level.

“As a manager you want all your players to be playing to a higher level as they can and their ability deserves.”

Graham Potter – Swansea manager

“I think he’d have been too quick for me. I wouldn’t have been able to get contact on him.

“Dan’s courage is incredible, to not only have the ability, but to ride the challenges. He’s a top player.”

Julien Laurens admits that going to Juventus is an option for Paul Pogba

Marcelo Bielsa – Leeds manager on James’ move to Elland Road falling through

“He was coming to the club to be a possibility on the wings but as I said several times, with all the other players who play on the sides we can find the right solution.

“I can’t deny that he would have been another option for our offensive play but I don’t see the fact that he couldn’t come as an obstacle for us.”
