Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri ‘unprofessional’ for barely watching Callum Hudson-Odoi play for England, says Tony Cascarino

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been branded ‘unprofessional’ for admitting he only watched 20 minutes of Callum Hudson-Odoi’s full England debut against Montenegro.

Former Blues striker Tony Cascarino was stunned by the Italian coach’s comments, and is certain he will not be in charge of the club next season.

Hudson-Odoi enjoyed a brilliant international break with the Three Lions squad, playing and impressing in both of England’s Euro 2020 qualifying wins over Czech Republic and Montenegro – against whom he made his full debut.

Yet, the 18-year-old was left on the bench for Chelsea’s clash at Cardiff – a controversial 2-1 win for the Blues – and he remains without a Premier League start to his name.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, Sarri even admitted he didn’t pay full attention to the youngster’s games for England.

“[I watched] only 20 minutes because I had 14 players in the internationals so I didn’t have time to watch 20 matches,” said the Italian.

“He [Hudson-Odoi] didn’t start very well on the right but did very well on the left.”

This didn’t impress Cascarino, who said on Monday’s Sports Breakfast: “We’ve heard of how Marcelo Bielsa is so thorough in everything he does, you’d think as a club manager you’d be all over how your players did when they were sent away.

“You’d want to know how they got on, you’d want to see their performance, even if you had to watch it a day later.

“To come out and blatantly say, ‘I don’t really know how he did’, it’s just not on!

“I don’t get it, you should be watching over all your players when they’re away on international duty!

“It’s unprofessional. You’re not doing your job if you’re not watching your players.

“I just find it strange to admit you didn’t see him.

“This is a young lad of 18 who had been sent away on international duty and given an opportunity to make his debut and you’re not watching to see how he got on?

“If you’re saying something like that, that’s being unprofessional in your job as a manager.”

Sarri left Hudson Odoi on the bench AGAIN against Cardiff

Chelsea needed two late goals to overcome relegation-threatened Cardiff on Sunday, and Blues fans sang anti-Sarri chants throughout the match.

And, asked if the boss will stay at the club this summer, Cascarino added: “No chance, I can’t see it.

“The fans are frustrated and they are pointing the finger at Sarri because they believe he is under achieving, which I would agree with.

“He’s got a hell of a talented squad.”
